Top 10 Tips for Passing the Real Estate Exam

Updated: Jul 30, 2019

Here are just a few tips gathered from student feedback (and personal experience) in taking the Iowa Real Estate Exam:

  1. Many students find the study guides and flashcards to be helpful. (Everyone learns differently.)

  2. Don't spend all of your time studying math questions. (Statistically, you'll have fewer than 6 math questions.)

  3. Take a pre-test the night before, or morning of, your exam. (This helps you get into the rhythm of how the questions are asked.)

  4. Be on-time, bring 2 IDs & your 60 hour completion certificate, and leave everything else in the car.

  5. Read the answer all the way through. (You'll frequently see a "halfway" answer.)

  6. Read the last line of the question first. (This can help you determine what the question is really asking.)

  7. Skip questions until you know that you know the answer. (The first questions may feel like a foreign language.)

  8. Go with your first instinct- but flag the question if you're unsure. (You probably know the correct answer. Trust your gut.)

  9. It's ok to go back and change an answer. (Sometimes the answer to a question is in another question.)

  10. It's normal to feel nervous. (No one knows if you didn't pass the first time- unless you tell them.)
